I grew up riding the NY subway and taking the Jersey Transit bus and trains. To this day I love riding trains and have tried to take Amtrak. But they are so unpredictable and expensive for longer travel! If only we subsidized the trains in a way to make them a practical mode of transport in the country (outside the east coast). We would get significant numbers of cars off the road and allow people to be riders, not drivers.

I would love to see rail all along 35. Amtrack is great on the east coast but as you say, unpredictable in the Midwest.

No local trains in Omaha, but for years, there has been a push for one from Omaha to Lincoln. We do have Amtrak that I hope to use soon to Denver or Chicago. A new rapid transit bus comes every 10 min. along Dodge St. (Omaha's main east west route). It's a block from my home and I love to take it! Some of the seats are "bar height" so you can really see the view from a new angle.

Thank you for the comment, Shirley. I know a lot of people who have taken the Amtrak to Denver and love it. Keep on riding the rails!

I love the idea of being along for the journey, trusting others to make decisions along the way. It will come. It may be retirement!

Thanks for the comment, Diane! Wasn't sure where I was going with this poem, which is kind of ironic. Are you a train person?

Suzanna,

I wish you days in your future "being a Wanderer". Just spending pensive moments, hours, perhaps days, "riding the rails" allowing your mindfulness to wander the pop up ideas and memory's which arise as you scan the passing views.

We loved our Amtrak travel to California 12 or so years ago. Would do it again on a trip to enjoy the landscape. Many times I wished I could commute the 60 miles to Des Moines to work! Wonderful poem!

Thanks, Cheryl! I wish we had trains here. I adore Amtrack — used to take the train to DC or Boaton from NYC. Appreciate your comment.

Thanks. I really appreciate this. Reminds me of my occasional visits to DC for business riding the red and yellow and other lines and sometimes buses when staying with family and commuting to meetings and appointments. I too was focused on the destination and making sure I got on the correct trains, changed as needed and keeping track of my bags. Even taking the correct exit was a challenge at times.

I can understand this feeling of not being the leader and instead just following for the sake of it. I'm not a good traveler. Unless we're talking by horse. The only train I can think of riding was the shuttle at Disney World and then I was so excited to get there I didn't notice much about the ride. Try a horse, so much calmer and you can feel the wind.

Love it. I like horses even more than trains.
