We Cannot Comment
A News Response Poem
Over the state fair. Sugar, grease, small joy. Something hums above it. Over the wedding. White dress, open sky. A shadow circles the promise. Over the hills, where quiet used to mean peace, we are being watched. Unidentified drones. Spotted over a Fort. Spotted over a base. They tell us we cannot comment. We cannot comment. Like silence is safety. Like we won’t notice. What is a drone? An unmanned thing, they say. as if no hands means no harm. Then they amend. It’s an uncrewed thing. Less personal. Less human. No pilot. No blame. Just a machine learning your face before you learn its name. It watches the crops, the rivers, your front yard. Delivers packages and something heavier. What is a drone? We cannot comment. But we are closely monitoring the situation. We are closely monitoring the situation.

flawlessly depicts the impending collapse of our democracy....the photo of David Muir reporting the evening news underscores your words...
Haunting, scary, too many questions without answers. Thank you for capturing our current state.
