Sometimes walking out is the only way to walk toward yourself. It can be easier to stay, even when staying is a wound, aching, even when you can feel yourself crushed, bones and spirit breaking. Sometimes walking out is quitting, but not giving up: It’s saying yes to yourself, to the ember within, to the spark you can feel, no matter how momentary, how faint. I would have turned myself inside out for you. I thought it was always something I did or didn’t do. If only I could have made everything perfect, or bearable. But I could not. Sometimes walking out is courageous, sometimes necessity. When the unknown is an imperative, choosing yourself is choosing to breathe. Sometimes leaving is having faith, inching forward, one tiny step at a time, toward the promise of your center. It may take years to go. It may take a lifetime to rebuild. You may be the only one who believes it is possible, but it does not matter. Walk out, walk now. Step into the sound of your own voice, for yourself, for the world who needs to hear you.
