Free by Decree

A News Response Poem for Juneteenth

The bird sits in a cage,
balanced carefully on the perch, 
poised to take wing. A door opens,
but the bird is far away. 
It cannot hear the key in the lock, 
the latch being released, 
hinges swinging, entrance ajar. 
It cannot see the space beyond, 
feel the air, imagine the current. 
It listens for the song in the distance,
waiting. The news comes on foot,
free by decree, but even then, 
the bird sits silently for a moment, 
wondering, Is it true? Is it safe?
What does it feel like to scatter?
What does it feel like to fly?
How many times must we be freed
to be truly free?

Juneteenth commemorates an effective end of slavery in the United States, marking the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to proclaim slaves in that area free — two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.
